It's time to learn orchestration and use the massive sound of the orchestra in your compositions, while fully knowing what you are doing! Do you want to use the power of the orchestra in your compositions? Do you want that big and full orchestral sound, but aren't sure where to begin? Ever fiddled around with orchestral plugins, without truly knowing how to actually write for the instrument? Orchestration is much more than just selecting a VST and blindly composing away. There are many things you need to consider as the orchestrator. How do you make this line stand out? Which instrument should you select to play the melody, which technique for the chords and harmony? How do you make this section softer without actually writing pianissimo? Orchestration is the art of blending instruments and their techniques together. It is about careful selection of techniques, taking into consideration the instrument's natural strengths and weaknesses, tone and timbre. Which string should be used to play a mellow part, what articulation will achieve the lightest accompaniment? Orchestration often seems like a complicated and daunting topic, but it doesn't have to be. This course will simplify things down and take you by the hand in learning orchestration and instrumentation. Orchestration and Instrumentation are two topics that go hand in hand, and we'll be studying both. We will learn every articulation and technique available for the stringed instruments, with colourful examples to help you remember everything. You will hear audio samples and see the notation for each technique as we get fully acquainted with all the articulations the string family has to offer. We will be studying real orchestral scores from the great composers so you can see the concepts and techniques in action, analyse and break them down. Finally, in the practical section of the course we will go step-by-step and you will compose and orchestrate your own full composition for strings . By the end of this course, you will understand the string family completely and be able to analyse string works, use any string articulation and technique in your compositions, know how to orchestrate for strings, all the while composing through an orchestrator's perspective. At the end of the course series you will be able to fully write for orchestra and use each of the four families: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion . The Orchestra is a powerful tool, an essential tool in the arsenal of the composer or producer. Don't limit yourself by not being able to properly compose for orchestra. Let's begin learning orchestration today, starting with the strings, and you will become a proficient orchestrator and orchestral music composer in no time.

For those of you who feel your writing ability is held back by your piano, arranging, compositional strategy & harmonic knowledge this course is completely designed for you. And even if you’re basically semi-pro , but think your piano technique, voicings and harmonic knowledge are missing a trick, I still know the course will be of value to you. We cover extended Jazz Harmony, thematic writing, non-diatonic chord relationships and more. --- At the end of this course not only are you going to feel more strong and fluent as a writer , you’re going to be able to solve critical problems on the fly whilst composing; things like: ‘Where do I start? How do I generate material?’ ‘I have a chord progression, how do I make it more interesting?’ ‘How can I make my chords sound more sophisticated?’ ‘I have a chord progression, but I don’t know where to take it next’ ‘What’s the musical science behind why that sounds like it does ‘I have chords, how do I add a bass line?’ ‘I have a melody, how do I add chords?’ ‘I have chords, how do I add a melody?’ ‘I have a bass line, how do I add chords?’ ‘My melodies sound a little dull, how can I make them more interesting?’ ‘If my chords are going to stay the same, how can I make them sound different or more inspiring for the next section?’ --- At the end of this course, you’re going to be able to: Express yourself and your ideas fluently Know how to compose well & use extended music theory without having to involve yourself in reading music but by understanding simple patterns at the piano. Unleash your writing with tools to unblock the writing process and generate material with ease Be able to write anything from classical music, to jazz music to mainstream music - because the fundamental building blocks of harmony are largely the same. Build interesting chord progressions and choose from hundreds of other options when something doesn’t sound quite right Alleviate a lot of writer's block! Have specific principles, techniques and formulas for making music work at your fingertips Teach others the fundamentals of music theory and composition and keep teaching yourself so that you can learn and master piano more and more. The goal of this course is to give you fluency and OPTIONS so you can choose who you want to be and how you want to write, and express yourself in your own unique way. Above all, you should know that I obsess about teaching effectively - there’s no rambling, tangents, wasted space or filler. This course will take you behind the scenes and show you the history of how music notation came about and how it developed into the standard music notation we use today. We also go into melody (intervals), two different types of harmony, rhythm and all the basic elements that a musical composition is made of. Even if you're just interested in learning about music notation, or writing music in general, this is a great primer course for those who want to get their feet wet in the area of music. As always, if you ever need help, I'm right there to help you with those questions and concerns. Also, any suggestions for improving the course are welcome!

This course gives you an outline of some of the things you should be watching out for as a composer. Over the years, I've noticed that a lot of my students overlook many things that should be integral to the creation process. Some of these are simple ideas, yet easily overlooked. I want to help you to gain more insight in what to look for to help you avoid these same traps. Composition can seem like something huge to take on, but is only as difficult as you make it. I want to help change that frame of mind by offering a series of insights that will help composition, and music in general, to become something much more interesting, much simpler, and hopefully much more natural in terms of your approach to composition. I have had a long career as a music teacher, composer and musician and would like to share my ideas with you. We will look at topics such as: How to 'think' like a composer Orchestration Vertical versus Linear Thinking Voice Leading Active listening Articulation Foreground and Background material Dynamics Composition maps Composing with random notes Examples from the repertoire With these and other topics, I want to help you focus on the more important aspects of composition. Some of the ideas may seem abstract, but this is just to get you 'thinking outside the box'. This course will not teach you how to compose. That's not the purpose. Anyone with a basic idea of music theory could, theoretically, compose. The object here is to give you some insight into best practice and to try to establish your own compositional voice.  Combining critical listening with score study can also help you achieve this, once you know what to listen for, and what to watch for in the score. There are some quite technical details in the course, but I deliberately try to avoid these where possible. There are many courses that can teach this and many, many books on the subject. This course is more about using the tools of music in combination with putting yourself into a composing frame of mind, using your own experiences to draw from. It's also about how your mindset can help you to achieve your goals. I hope you will join me here and get some new perspectives on composition. It's a wonderful art - but it's easier than you may think if you just start with the right information... Lawrence O'Donnell December 2020

Music is a universal language. Everyone has a favorite melody. Music allows people from all backgrounds to come together and share a common love. Although there are many different types of music, they all start with the same fundamentals. Having knowledge of music basics can be a beneficial skill in many aspects of life. Knowing these functions not only allows an individual to comprehend the language, it also allows them to tap into their own creativity and contribute towards the historical heritage of sound. This book series is intended to provide a concise, simple and effective way of explaining the fundamentals.

Music Composition 1 is the first course in a series of two courses that teaches how music is put together and how to write your own music. The course is divided into two parts. Part one covers the study of rhythmic composition. Part two covers the study of melodic composition. (Harmony and form are studied in Music Composition 2) Course lectures consist mainly of video but also include some text. Each section of the course covers a particular concept (or related concepts). Concepts and compositional techniques are demonstrated throughout the course with real musical examples (pictures and audio samples). Besides lectures, each section of the course also contains memory questions, section quiz, listening assignments, and transcription/composition assignments. Memory questions serve to summarize and reinforce key concepts learned, while the quizzes test the students’ knowledge and understanding of the material from each section. Students who take this course will get practice transcribing music (hearing a rhythm or a melody and writing it down). In the composition assignments students will get real life practice using the information and techniques learned in each section to write their own rhythms and melodies. Who should take this course? Every student of music should know how to compose! It is a sad but true fact that most modern music teachers and music courses do not include music composition as part of the students’ musical education. In the past it was typical for students of music to be able to compose music. The “complete” musician can play an instrument, has knowledge of music theory AND can also compose! If you want to deepen your understanding of music, learn to write it! Course Includes : 190 Diagrams and Audio Samples (to illustrate concepts taught) 125 Memory Questions (to reinforce concepts taught) 90 Transcription and Composition Assignments (to practice the concepts taught) 76 Listening Assignments 21 Quizzes
